The Region

Ariege with its mountains, lakes, waterfalls and forests, is a beautiful area within the Pyrenees. It is one of the least populated and most unspoilt regions of France and is an all year round destination with its mild winter climate and hot summers.

The area has an abundance of wild flowers and enjoys a multitude of different species of wild life like the angora goats, bear, wild boar, marmot, deer, red squirrel and many birds of prey such as vultures and eagles.

The region is also steeped in history with many castles to visit such as Montsegur, or the nearest castle, which dominates the town of Foix.

Visit the medieval town of Mirepoix, or the spa town of Ax Les Thermes, all of which are close by.Carcassonne is a fabulous city and well worth a visit.

There are many grottos and caverns and during the summer months there are many local village fetes as well as the magnificent medieval festival of lights in the grounds of the castle of Foix.

The Mediterranean beaches of Languedoc and the pretty fishing village of Collioure are within a reasonable driving distance. Andorra with its shopping and winter ski slopes is also well worth a visit.

For those who enjoy sporting activities there is swimming, canoeing, rafting, paragliding, horse riding, fishing, cycling, golf and a multitude of walks, from walking in the valley to mountain walks up to 3000 metres in altitude.

In winter enjoy the cross-country and downhill skiing, without the crowds.
Ariege has ten ski stations, all of which are within easy reach, the nearest downhill being Mont D'Olmes.

Getting to the region is now very accessible with cheap flights to Toulouse and Carcassone, both of which are approximately one hour's drive away.
